Our word of the week this week is RISK. Our quote of the week is: In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. This makes me think of Bronnie Ware, author and palliative nurse’s discovery of the #1 regret of the dying. “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”
How often do we do what others want us to do? How often do we stay comfortable in our box? And by doing so, what are we missing out on?
When we are children, we explore and take risks. I remember when my daughter Taylor was little. She wanted to ride The Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios at Disney World. She didn’t follow through on a couple of visits. Then finally one visit she decided this was it. We rode it first thing in the morning before she could change her mind. She screamed through the whole ride with her head in my chest. We exited and went to purchase the photo to prove she did it. When the cast member asked her how she liked the ride, she replied white as a ghost and quivering, “I loved it. Can we do it again?” It was not the response I expected but she was elated she did it. And wanted to do it again! She also found a love for coasters she may not have found without experiencing the ride. NO REGRETS! Now she is my coaster partner!
As adults, we often avoid new experiences and challenges, as well as stepping out of our comfort zone. But at what cost? What are we missing? How do we find our child-like elation, joy, and happiness if we never try anything new? Taking risks requires confidence.
